El Salvadorian Food

Waking up at 11:00 am on a Saturday is quite early. But touring the Capitol and eating a delicious meal is definitely worth it.

The United States Capitol
For some reason, the entire entrance area was blocked.
Overall, this is such an incredibly beautiful building. So much historical architecture from the Greek and Roman era- it is a classic site.

I should have worn a business suit to match the very formal landscape

The Statue of Freedom

Helen Keller

The breathtaking rotunda (inside the great dome)

I love the many different levels of design and art around the rotunda
One thing that GREATLY disappointed me was the lack of 3D architecture to represent those Greek figures

What a lovely room to honor these men

Declaration of Independence

Library of Congress

Tortilla Cafe (4.5 of 5 stars)
Such a perfect coincidence that the night before, Cameron and Ivan saw an episode of this restaurant featured on Diners Dive-Ins and Dives. I've never had Salvadorian food, but I'm definitely loving it.

A small restaurant with some powerful Salvadorian flavors.
The service was extremely nice and fast too

One thing this restaurant lacks is personality. I do not believe that the decor represents the Salvadorian culture at all.

Angel's "Pupusa Platter"- $6.29
The pupusa was topped with some spicy and sour coleslaw blend
Angel was in love with his dish

Leo's "Chicken Taco Salad" - $7.65
This was a colorful site- it looked absolutely delicious with its vibrant colors
Leo commented: "it is so good, I can't stop eating it"

Caleb's "Tex-Mex Fajitas" - $8.50
This was a nice combination platter with chicken and shrimp to enjoy with corn tortillas
Caleb said: "this is so good"
I definitely agree that it smelled delicious and looked very appetizing

Their most popular items include pupusa and tamale so I decided to try it. The portion was definitely very generous for the bargain price that I paid.

Sweet-corn Tamale with Pork- $2.25
This is not your typical tamale. At first, you might find the mushy and very blended texture to be strange. However, I really enjoyed the grainy and soft texture with the lightly spiced pork. The banana leaf (instead of the corn leaf) keeps the tamale nice and moist.

Chicken and Cheese Pupusa- $1.75
Angel explained a pupusa to be two tortillas with fillings. I thought this was definitely a unique item.
Cynthia described it as "flaky, soft, and fluffy". It is comparable in texture to an Asian Green Onion Pancake.

As featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives
Overall: The price was amazing. In DC, I always end up paying an average of $10 for a meal. This was definitely money well spent

Some UCDC students who woke up early to enjoy the tour of the Capitol!

  1. I agree the restaurant needs to be redecorated to give the place a more Latin American vibe but I must admit the pupusas were on point. For those that are interested on trying the pupusas I would recommend you wash it down with a nice sweet jugo de maracuya (passionfruit juice)and after take a stroll out to the Eastern Market on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
